There was a darkness spreading through the world, seeping through the water in sleepless, ravenous agony. The darkness cried out in pain and misery and the world heard it and pitied it, and although they tried to feed the shadows their material food was no sustenence to the beings of the shadow-realm.
But one day the shadows tasted the sweet water of the wells, the wells that laughed as they stole water from deep inside the earth, ripping it from its home for humankind to consume as they saw fit.
And though the darkness felt compassion for this other estranged creature, it grew more and more ravenous until all the water in the land began to fear for itself, for there was so little of it left.
Light fell upon the world and the trees withered and vanished, and the people cried out to the shadow to give them their water back.
But the shadow wanted only for more...
